Name That Beer
Name that Beer is a style based club activity that challenges participant's tasting skills and style knowledge. Participants are asked to taste various beer samples and determine the style (and the actual beer). There are a couple of variations of this event. One is suited more for large groups, the other works well with small groups.
Large Group Name that Beer
- Stewards prepare the beer in a back room and then pour beer for the group from unmarked pitchers.
- All participants taste the beer and make their own notes about the beer. Participants should note the following aspects of the beer:
- Is it an ale or a lager? (1 point if right)
- What is the category? (1 point if right)
- What is the subcategory? (1 point if right)
- Name that beer! (2 points if right)
- After everyone has had a chance to write down their answers, get a volunteer (or - pre-arrange your volunteers) to tell the group their assessment of the beer. Experienced judges & brewers are usually good choices. Then - the group can discuss as appropriate. Everyone should score their own cards.
- Move on to the next beer and repeat. Six beers is a practical maximum for a large group.
- Participants add up their scores - with the highest scores winning bragging rights! As a bonus - give any extra unopened bottles from the event to the top few winners!
Small Group Name That Beer
For small groups - this can be run like many similar wine events.
- Select 10 beers for the event. Label each beer 1 through 10
- Prepare a sheet with numbers for beer samples and letters for the beer names. Make sure to mix up the beer names so they don't match the numbers! Make copies for everyone.
- A steward pours the numbered beers for the participants. All beers are poured, and the participant tries to match up the beer with the appropriate name.
- The person with the most correct wins bragging rights. As a bonus - give any extra unopened bottles from the event to the top few winners!
- Evil Variation: have 15 names for the 10 possible beers - so not all names will be used. Make sure that some of the options are in the same category/subcategory to make things more difficult.
